Information

The Maruyama Zoo in Sapporo City was the first zoo to open in Hokkaido in May 1951 (Showa 26).

Despite being located in the heart of Sapporo, a city of 1.9 million people, the zoo is surrounded by nature such as the Maruyama primeval forest, making it a facility where visitors can enjoy all four seasons throughout the year.

The zoo remains open during the winter, and it houses a variety of animals that are active during the colder months, including polar bears, red pandas, and snow leopards.

The indoor exhibition facilities are also extensive.
The elephant enclosure, where Asian elephants are kept, is one of the largest indoor facilities in Japan.
It includes features like an indoor pool that allows elephants to bathe even in winter, providing ample opportunities for the elephants to thrive and stay active.
