The former naval headquarters bunker was the site of the headquarters of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Okinawa Area Ground Forces during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, a large-scale ground war that involved the local population.
The commanding officer's office, operations room, staff room, signal room, medical room, etc. remain as they were in those days, and serve as a place to appeal the tragedy and harshness of war and to pray for peace.
In the museum attached to the site, artifacts and photographs found in the bunker are on display.
